In many genre projects, robots are weird and often dangerous, and Apple TV+’s Sunny is the latest show to treat them as such, if the trailer is any indication.

The show, produced by A24, comes to us from Katie Robbins (The Affair) and is based on the book Dark Manual by Japan-based award-winning Irish writer Colin O’Sullivan. It stars Rashida Jones (Silo) and the trailer suggests it’s disturbingly weird, possibly funny, and definitely unsettling.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Sunny stars Jones as Suzie, an American woman living in Kyoto, Japan, whose life is upended when her husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash. As “consolation” she’s given Sunny, one of a new class of domestic robots made by her husband’s electronics company. Though at first Suzie resents Sunny’s attempts to fill the void in her life, gradually they develop an unexpected friendship, as together they uncover the dark truth of what really happened to Suzie’s family, becoming dangerously enmeshed in a world Suzie never knew existed.

In addition to Jones, Sunny stars Hidetoshi Nishijima as Masa Sakamoto, Joanna Sotomura as the robot Sunny, Judy Ongg as Noriko Sakamoto, YOU as Hime, annie the clumsy as Mixxy, and Jun Kunimura as Yuki Tanaka. Lucy Tcherniak (Station Eleven, The End of the F***ing World) also directs some episodes and serves as executive producer.

The first two episodes of Sunny premiere on Apple TV+ on July 10, 2024. A new episode in the ten-episode season becomes available every Wednesday after through September 4, 2024.
